November 29, 2025 – Cyclone Ditwah, the storm that has already claimed 123 lives and left 130 missing in Sri Lanka, is barreling towards India’s east coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds up to 90 kmph, and potential flooding. With the system intensifying, coastal districts are bracing for impact as early as tomorrow morning.

Cyclone Ditwah Current Status & Path

As per IMD’s latest bulletin (5:30 PM IST Nov 29), Ditwah is centered over coastal Sri Lanka and southwest Bay of Bengal, about 80 km ESE of Jaffna, 190 km SSE of Karaikal, 300 km SSE of Puducherry, and 400 km south of Chennai. Moving NNW at 7 kmph, it’s expected to intensify slightly before hitting the coast.

  • Landfall Time: Early Nov 30 near North TN-Puducherry-South AP
  • Wind Speed: 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph
  • Track: Parallel to TN coast, then into Bay of Bengal

The IMD has hoisted red alerts for isolated extremely heavy rain (>20 cm) in key districts:

  • Red Alert (Nov 30): Tiruvallur, Ranipet
  • Orange Alert: Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Chennai, Kancheepuram
  • Andhra Pradesh: South coastal & Rayalaseema – heavy rain Nov 29-Dec 1

Ditwah made first landfall on Sri Lanka’s east coast, causing flash floods, landslides, and gale-force winds. The toll stands at 123 dead (including 15 in a Kothmale landslide), 130 missing, and thousands displaced. International aid is pouring in, with India launching Operation Sagar Bandhu for relief.
